How does the race work?
When the race begins, teams of two or more will compete against each other to solve 11 out of the 12 clues we’ve carefully crafted, each of which will lead you to a unique challenge in a new location in the city. The quickest teams to return to the finish line after completing all the clues will win the cash prizes. 1st Place – $500, 2nd Place – $100, 3rd – $50.
How many people can be on a team?
Teams are made up of 2 or more racers. When deciding on the size of your team – remember you have to take a picture with everyone at each stop. You must be 18 or older to participate.
How much does it cost to participate in Challenge Wheeling?
Each entry costs $25 per person with all proceeds going to Youth Services System. Your entry includes your souvenir T-shirt, race number bib, clue sheet, bottled water, Italian Buffet, $1 Michelob Ultra Draft, and activities at the after-party, costume contest and of course a chance at the big cash prizes!
Do I need to train for this race?
No, Challenge Wheeling is designed to be a blast for all ability levels–you can choose your speed, whether you race to win or take a more leisurely approach, the choice is yours.
When is the registration deadline?
We will be taking registrations online all the way until the day before the race begins. Although, registrations received after May 31st are not guaranteed at T-shirt.
When is check-in?
Check in is 8:30 am-9:45 pm The race begins at 10am and the clock stops at 1:00 pm. The start and finish of the race is at River City located at 1400 Main Street, Wheeling.
What is the race course?
You make the course! There is no set course from clue to clue–everybody’s route is different.
How long does the race last?
It can vary slightly, but we expect our fastest finishers to complete the Challenge between 1 hour and 1.5 hours. We will continue to take finish times for approximately 3 hours after the race begin for those that are enjoying themselves out there!
What should I wear?
Remember that you’ll be getting a t-shirt at registration, so plan ahead to wear that if you’d like. Otherwise, you should wear comfortable gear appropriate for the weather forecast–we will go forward rain or shine, as long as it is not hazardous. You also have the option of running in your best costume and be eligible for our costume contest.
What happens if it rains?
The race goes forward, rain or shine. Racer safety is our primary interest, so the only exception will be due to extremely hazardous weather, in which case we’ll post a notice on our website and Facebook with further details about a new race date.
Are refunds available?
All registration sales are final and non-refundable for any reason, but are easily transferable to someone else, just contact us.
What do I need to bring with me?.
Bring your ID with you to verify that you have registered. You will also need your ID if you are planning on drinking at the After-party. Smart phones are allowed as a tool, and one digital camera/camera phone per team is required to snap a picture of your team at each stop.
Can I use a car? A bike? A taxi?
Only your own two feet and public transit are allowed. No bike, no rollerblades, no skateboards, no taxis, no cars, etc.
Any other rules?
Teams must stick together for each clue photo and cross the finish line together to record a finish time. Teams must complete 11 of the 12 clues, which allows you to skip on clue that might be stumping you.
